Hola! My name is Karen and I am from Guatemala, Central America. I arrived in Dublin in August to study a Masters at Griffith College. Since I arrived here, I have felt very welcome, and so I would love to give back to this wonderful community a little of what I have received.
Coming from a developing country, I know first-hand the positive impact that solidarity, kindness and empathy can have on a person's life.
It is a great honour for me to be part of this amazing project and help raise funds to support the children at CHI hospitals in Crumlin, Temple Street, Tallaght, and Connolly. My target is to raise €1000 or more in 100 days. All funds raised this year will go towards a new state of the art paediatric simulation centre.
All donations are greatly appreciated!

Fiesta Latina | Face to face event| Thursday, 3 February, 2022| 4.00-8.00 pm
Posted: about 1 year ago
Last Thursday, I organised a 'Fiesta Latina' (Latin Party) in my student accommodation to raise funds to support the most vulnerable children in Ireland as part of my participation as a mentee in 100minds, an amazing project that has allowed me to get involved in my new community; to seek and receive support from strangers who have become friends; and to meet excellent professionals whom I admire.
I'm sharing this video summarising last Thursday's activity as a thank you for all the support I received! To be able to represent and share a bit of the joy of my culture by singing the lotería (similar to bingo); dancing salsa; eating tacos; listening to cumbia, bachata, merengue and samba, was priceless!

Many thanks also to everyone who has supported this project with their donations, time or sharing. All donations are still more than welcome!

Lessons learned from volunteering
Posted: about 1 year ago
Last year I decided to leave my career in the corporate world to fulfil one of my dreams: to come to Dublin to study for a Master's degree. My new lifestyle has given me more time to do other things I have wanted to do for a long time, such as volunteering for causes close to my heart.
In fact, I now have the honour of volunteering for two amazing projects that I am thrilled about and have allowed me to fulfil this other dream I had. One of them has been 100minds, a programme that has challenged me to raise 1,000 euros in 100 days to help sick children through different fundraising events.
Today I am at the end of this journey and these are three of my biggest learnings:
The experience is more extrapolable than we think, we just need to be open-minded and give way to creativity. Thinking about how we can put the tools, knowledge and connections we have at the service of any cause helped me to see opportunities and serendipities that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.
When planning activities we have to be fully committed, but also have the conviction of what we are doing. One of the things I decided early on is that I wanted all fundraising activities to be consistent with my values and aspirations while adding value to people's lives.
It's great to ask for help. From the beginning, I had the support of so many people who were willing to listen to my ideas, give me their suggestions and help me refine them, as well as share their strengths and skills to make each event a success. Although things didn't always go as planned, whenever I needed help, I got it in one way or another.
Fundraising in a foreign country- 8,072 km away from home, my comfort zone and where my strongest connections are; and in a different currency- has not been easy at all, but boy, these 100 days have taught me so much! It reminds me to always be a learner of my environment and find abundance everywhere I go.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the people who have been there for me from the beginning: My brother, Ian Padilla, who has always been there supporting me; my friends Elise Lasko and Maria Fernanda Alvarez Rojas, who, despite the distance, have been with me since the beginning of this project and have listened and encouraged me more than once; and to my new professional connections from 100minds, who soon became friends as well, Adina Sarah Abraham, Emma Flynn and Áine Foley. Without you this project would never have been as fun and rewarding! And of course, many thanks to all the people who have donated to this project from all over the world!
Generosity has no nationality and no limits. You can still support this project by donating by clicking on the blue botton on this page.
Thank you so much not only for each and every donation and generosity, but also for helping mentees like me to grow personally and professionally through the experience of volunteering!
Thank you for participating in the Bake Sale!

A massive thank you to everyone who came to our charity bake sale last Friday and Saturday! If you missed it, you can still support sick children with your donations on this page!
We made a short video to thank again our sponsors, Little Bird (@littlebirdcoffeeyoga) and Noshington Cafe (@noshingtoncafe), as well as Griffith SU for supporting this event! It wouldn't have been possible without your help!
